Backwoods Solar
Build a great, low-cost backwoods solar system
Putting together your own backwoods solar installation can be a very smart idea.
Perhaps you're thinking of building a nice home-brew solar project to enhance the comfort of your holiday
cabin.
Maybe you already live in the woods and can't get access to regular,
domestic power because of your isolated location.
You may even be a hunter or fisherman who wants some bare necessities (or some home comforts) during your
trips to the wilderness.
Or is it just that you're simply fed up with suburbia and want to disconnect completely and retire to the
backwoods?!

Whatever the reason for
wanting a good custom backwoods solar power setup, as long as you get a fair amount of sunlight most days of
the week then you can use the sun's natural radiation to great advantage. You can really enrich
your living experience by using solar energy. And you'll feel good about it too.
A lot of people who build their own backwoods solar power do so, not because of it being a cool or
trendy to do (perhaps like some city-dwellers may think) but out of necessity and economics. Environmental concerns
might (or might not) take a back seat when you're living in the woodland and need a reliable way to keep warm, cook
your food and keep warm - particularly if you have a family.
Before you start planning and building your wilderness solar project you need to ensure you have good
access to the sun. This may seem obvious but some people just don't worry about it at first. And this is
especially so in really remote rural areas.
Clear around your cabin or house and make sure that it's fee from overhanging trees and branches which might
restrict your available sunlight. This will also help prevent damage to the panels later on.
Also think about the best place to place your solar panels, again so that they catch the full amount of light.
Panel orientation really is critical. This won't be so bad if you live in the hinterland or on a farm where it may
be a bit more open but it can have a big impact on your backwoods solar power setup.

You probably only want to use solar for everyday basics. After all we don't usually live in the backwoods and want
to take all our modern day paraphernalia with us. It sure can cause a rethink on what we really need or not, for
example televisions and toasters may not be on your agenda to use.
In this case the equipment you'll need when setting up will most likely be only a bare minimum - although you
can expand your backwoods solar installation later on if you need to. In any event it's generally a good idea to
start simple.
The parts you need may vary but usually can be sourced pretty cheaply and you can even buy components second
hand if you want, especially if money is tight like it is to so many of us today. You can use an electric or a gas
generator as a "plan b" or backup option (in case of equipment failures or times of poor sunlight) for your
backwoods solar power rig but most people don't find it necessary if they have reasonable sun and have put just a
little thought into building their system. You can use industrial type batteries to store your energy if you want
to. Some on a shoestring budget have even been know to use regular heavy duty "truck" batteries.
The wiring in a back country solar setup is not hard to do but don't be tempted to do it yourself if
you're not qualified. You're much better off to get a licensed tradesman to do it for you. That way it's done once
and it's done properly and you can sleep easy at night knowing you and perhaps, your family are safe. You can therefore
enjoy all the benefits that having backwoods solar has to offer. It's a one-off cost that will pay off in the
long run.
That part will be about the biggest cost of your project but rest assured it won't be a huge job and so won't
cost the earth.
Make sure you get informed of the basics with reliable information. There's a lot of misinformation floating
around out there so look into your options and choose wisely.
Good luck, stay safe and warm in the wilderness and my best wishes planning and installing your
backwoods solar setup.
