Build Your Own Wind Generator
Ever wanted to build your own wind generator but don't know where to
start?
Over time, wind generators can really save you a lot of money on electricity.
Although a wind power generator doesn't require much space it does require a little more maintenance than a
solar power system.
For one, unlike a solar power setup, a wind generator is a mechanical system that contains
moving parts.
That said, if your generator is fairly soundly built maintaining it can be as simple as
applying a little rim oil here and there. But if not it can be your worst nightmare; a poorly built,
flimsy wind generator will not last.

If you build your own wind generator you should try to over-engineer it a little because
a strong and solidly constructed design is best. This is really important in the long term
as you don't want to be spending any more time or money on upkeep than necessary.
You should think about efficiency to get the best out of you wind power installation. Designing and cutting the
blades so they "bite" into and capture the wind is really important. In an ideal situation a single blade is the
most efficient but as it's not really practical a three blade-system is an ideal medium.
If you're completely detached from the grid you'll probably want to store your generated
electricity to use later on. This is done using deep cycle batteries. As you'd expect, using batteries
is best suited to off-grid applications. They should be "sized" as part of your capacity planning (at the
design specification stage) so that they will hold enough energy to run your household for at least 24 hours and
anything up to three days just in case the wind quietens for a while.
Even then you might find you need a backup system, perhaps a fuel powered generator or even a basic solar
installation just to get you by in a worse-case scenario.
Actually, you don't even have to use batteries for energy storage at all. Obviously, in that case you can save
some money. You can still make wind power while living connected to the normal electricity
grid. In fact, not using batteries will give you better
efficiency in terms of energy production. It also means that you can use wind generated power while the wind
blows and revert to using regular grid energy when it subsides.
Finally, you probably don't realize that the voltage generated with a home built wind generator
fluctuates quite a lot. This is why wind energy is often referred to as "wild energy".
It's because of the inherently unstable nature of wind that wind generated
electricity usually has to be regulated or conditioned before being used within your household.
The equipment required to achieve this is only minimal and pretty inexpensive.
