Cabin Solar Power
Living in a cabin can be challenging. On one hand we love our independence and solitude and on the other we
sometimes crave a little comfort.
Installing a simple cabin solar power system sure as heck beats living in the dark and using candles or kerosene
lanterns like in the old days.
Nowadays anyone can use simple, modern technology to smarten up the way they live.
So whether you live in the mountains, desert or woods you really can have the best of both worlds. If
you're used to living in relative darkness at night in your cabin then - take it from me - having a simple solar
power setup is sure going to seem like a real luxury!

It doesn't matter at all whether you already own a shack or if you're started building one. Even if it's
still only in the planning stage you can customize your cabin solar power system to fit in pretty much any remote
area you could imagine and for any sized cabin.
If you are yet to commence building then you have the added bonus in that you can incorporate passive solar
energy principles and techniques (ie placement of your camp, the clever use of glass, appropriate angles etc.) to
add even more efficiency. However this kind of stuff is secondary, really and getting a good solar setup is the
main thing.
As it happens, most cabin dwellers are pretty content with using solar power for lighting, boiling their kettle
with perhaps a toaster and TV thrown in as well. That's usually it really. Those things are pretty
easy to achieve with only very basic knowledge. Others might think of adding a hot water service. If
that's the case then it will take some extra resources and planning. But this kind of thing is
certainly attainable - as proven by a heaps of people.
There are lots of energy saving devices around too which everyone, including cabin owner's should be aware of.
Carefully selecting your electrical items invariably means increased efficiency and therefore savings. It's
the same with heating. If you don't want to use wood heating then go for an ultra efficient electric heater,
powered by your solar generated electricity.
The energy generated by your solar heating can be optimized further by adding insulation to your bungalow.
You'll need a ceiling cavity for best results but you can also add insulation to your walls depending on your
design.
You're probably aiming to do a fair bit of the building and installing yourself (maybe with the help of a friend
or two if you're smart) so make sure you're well prepared. Plan your project by making complete lists of
materials and tools so that you can have everything on hand at your location. Keep a few spare parts on hand too.
Once you have your project built keep spare parts in a nice dry place.
Also, try not to be lazy about maintenace! Cabin's generally need a reasonable amount of upkeep - just as
you'd try to keep your front porch clean make sure you don't neglect your solar panels. Keep them clear from debris
and snow as it obviously tends to accumulate much more in the outdoors than when living in the city. This is
a prime reason why cabin owners sometimes experience reduced efficiency in their
solar setups. It's easily avoided!
A routine inspection and cleaning schedule will help alleviate this if you live in the "middle of nowhere".
Hot and cold extremes can mean you might have to reseal your solar panel housings now and again. Getting water
into a housing is a problem sure worth avoiding. It's a major cause of deterioration which is also easily
prevented.
It all boils down to just doing a little research and being prepared. That way things will run
smoothly and you'll have ample power - on demand - to use for anything you want to run. Get
organized - and get the very best from your cabin solar power installation.
