When you choose to get off the grid and to generate your own electricity you can keep all the luxuries
of a conventional house and continue the comfortable lifestyle that you're used to.
Keep all the luxuries... if you want to
If you thought that by getting off the grid and disconnecting completely from mains electricity that you have to
completely stop using your everyday "essentials" like television, freezers, computers and microwave ovens then
nothing can be further from the truth, as people every day, all over the world are finding out. You really don't
have to make many compromises or do without anything if you don't want to. The choice really is yours!
About the only thing you need to do is to slightly readjust the way you do things because getting off the grid
does tend to challenge the mind a little. You see, we're all used to living lifestyles of excess and relative waste
and to finally take control of the way we live and make a solid decision to start saving money and
our environment is a great experience. It's also incredibly empowering.
Assessing your basic options
You might already live in a remote place where connection to the electricity grid is impossible (or at least
cost-prohibitive) because of distance or remoteness. Perhaps you might be thinking about buying a home in the
wilderness or a cabin tucked away in the woods and so need to generate your own power. Or like the majority of us
you might be living in suburbia and want move off grid to save money, plain and simple by cutting your power
bills.
You have a couple of basic options when you decide to get off the grid. Firstly, you can
choose to live without electricity completely, just like our forefathers. There's nothing wrong with that by the
way; it's an ideal situation - even a dream - for many people. It just depends how you want to live and what
you're prepared to do without.
Secondly, you can install a simple and efficient system incorporating solar panels and/or wind power generators.
Basically, with this type of installation, excess generated electricity is stored in batteries which are regulated
using a controller. Power is supplied to your household via an inverter. This allows you to use your regular electrical appliances.
On cloudy days, a wind generator can top up your batteries if necessary or
alternatively a fuel powered generator can be used. Either way you will need some kind of backup generator as
you can't realistically expect the sun to be shining 100% of the time when you're living off the grid. A basic
system doesn't have to cost the earth (particularly if you're fond of a bit of simple DIY) and if you're smart
about it, you can obtain significant savings over the long-term.
